Recycling Initiatives as of January 28

Over the past week or so, I have been working extensively on the issue of recycling on campus. I have communicated with Harry Hilliard, Director of Recycling.

One of my objectives for this year was to add a few larger recycling bins around campus - to offer a central location for recycling and also an option for off campus students to dispose of their recyclables. My thoughts were to have one of these bins on upper campus and another one lower campus in between David Lawrence and Hillman - however Mr. Hilliard did not feel it was the university's responsibility to provide recycling for off campus students. I feel that it is Pitt's responsibility to provide students with the necessary means to recycle, regardless of if they live on and off campus - and let the students choose if they want to do so or not. I will continue working on this project despite the roadblock.

Additionally I have been researching recycling computers, and I discovered University’s “Surplus Property” website. It has on it old computers, desks, chairs, and even vehicles that the school is not using anymore. Students can donate to this if they have surplus material as well. On this site, students and faculty can purchase used property, such as computers, for a much discounted price. However, there is not a large selection, and as of now there are only computer monitors available on the site.

This is a good resource; however I don’t think anyone knows about it and it is not updated often – so I will try to communicate with them about increasing awareness of it. I also want to talk with them about their policies of things if they do not sell them.

That is all for now. Have a great week!

Office Hours!

Hey Everyone!

I am extremely excited to serve the student body for the 2008 school year on Student Government Board.

The 2008 Board just returned from a very succesful retreat. We worked very hard setting up our goals and organizing the student government procedures for the new year.

I also just set up my office hours for Spring 2008. They will all be held at 848 in the WPU. They are as follows:

Monday: 1:00-2:00pm and 3:00-5:00pm
Tuesday: 4:00-5:00pm
Wednesday: 1:00-5:00pm
Friday: 2:00-4:00pm

Please feel free to come and visit me to discuss any student issues during these office hours. If you can't make any of these times, email me at gms21@pitt.edu.

Hail Pitt!

Gary
